Dana Linn Bailey and Jay Cutler dominate a Texas chest and tricep workout

By | 5 August, 2022

Former Women’s Physique Olympia winner Dana Linn Bailey and four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler reunited for a chest workout in Houston, TX, where they traveled to American Fit Expo 2022. Their training session was filmed and posted to Bailey’s YouTube channel on July 27, 2022.

I don’t know why it took so long. I’m finally training with the one and only Jay Cutler.

Bailey follows Cutler’s lead at the gym during the day as they complete a full chest and tricep workout. Check it out below:

Chest and Tricep Workouts by Jay Cutler and Dana Linn Bailey

We record the exercises in the same order that Cutler and Bailey performed during their training.

oblique chest press, Flat bench press with dumbbells fly up

Cutler started with four working sets of 10 to 12 reps on a plate-loaded chest press. On the final set, Bailey managed eight reps and audibly transitioned into a drop set to make the most of it. The chest incline opens your workout as you work the chest in its extended position at the bottom of each rep. This can help develop the upper chest, which was one of Cutler’s strengths in his prime.

The second movement, now that they were warmed up, was a dumbbell flat press for four working sets of 10-12 reps. Again, they emphasized stretching at the bottom of each rep with compression at the top while maintaining tight, controlled form.

All I do is 12 reps, you’ll find I do 12 even when I can do more reps.

Next came Incline Plate-Loaded Flys, which Cutler attends at his home gym in Las Vegas, NV because the movement provides a deep stretch. Cutler and Bailey stuck to four sets of 12 reps. Cutler said he’s trained in this rep range his entire career — wise advice that you don’t have to fail every set of every workout to see results.

Wire low to high flyes and Tricep Pushdowns

Cutler and Bailey hit low to high cable flights on the cable machine to emphasize upper chest work. Both athletes stuck to four sets of 12 reps. This pattern of consistent reps for each movement differed from Bailey’s standard training program, which typically consists of drop sets and supersets for higher volume.

[For] Isolation movements People think of cable exercises as finishing movements only. I don’t think that’s the case.

Cutler and Bailey challenged the triceps by performing pull-ups with straps instead of a rope attachment to hit most of the triceps. Cutler opted for four working sets of 12 reps each, with a pulse at the end of each rep. Tricep curls are a great move to warm up the triceps and build circumference towards the horseshoe aesthetic.

EZ Bar Skull Crusher

Bailey finished on the last move before venturing into the exhibition: face-down skull crusher and an EZ bar for wrist comfort. He performed four sets of 10-12 reps and finished with tight-grip tricep extensions to failure.

I like the EZ handlebar because it feels… more ergonomically correct.

Bailey is currently taking a break from competitive bodybuilding to focus on her and her husband’s Flag Nor Fail company and has not indicated in this video if there are any current plans for her return to the competitive phase. Cutler has retired from the sport and lives in Las Vegas, NV where he focuses his energies on his company, Cutler Athletics.
